Interpretation of Genre

What I love about writing is the kind of freedom you have. It's not like math where your product is either right or wrong, you can do anything you want because writing is really just translating your thoughts into words. To a lot of people, the genre of a book is pretty much black and white. Fiction is fake, nonfiction is not fake, biographical is about someone and an autobiographical is about the writer. But really, there is a whole slew of details involved with choosing and interpreting a genre.

A genre is not black and white, just because a story is fiction doesn't mean that it cannot be realistic. Blurring the lines between different categories of genres often makes stories more interesting. One rule I learned is to never let a genre define your story. Just because your story is fiction does not mean it cannot have real life themes. Just because a story is science fiction doesn't mean it has to to involve aliens or futuristic scenarios. Combine genres like settings and characters. Blend together fantasy and science fiction, a tried and true combination. Or you could step out of the box even further and combine something like fiction and biography. It doesn't have to be a biography on a real person, it could be a fake person with real historical events (Forrest Gump anyone?)
Anyway, I'm trying to keep this one short so like usual, like, dislike, agree, disagree, whatever you do; let me know! Also, if you want me to specifically talk about something, let me know :) Thanks for reading! Page views inspire me to keep posting :)
